P7 Pupils Put Their Knowledge to the Test at the Northern Ireland Primary School Road Safety Quiz Final
All roads led to Cookstown on Monday 10th March 2025, for the annual NI Primary School Road Safety Quiz Final. Sponsored by NI’s leading accident management company, CRASH Services the final was the culmination of 11 heats of this long-running event that has been a staple for over 30 years, growing each year thanks to the dedication of the volunteers from event organiser Road Safe NI.
Enthusiastic P7 pupils from schools right across Northern Ireland tested their road safety knowledge and general awareness in a fun and interactive way. Each participating school entered a team of four pupils who competed in a challenging table quiz designed to reinforce essential road safety education while promoting teamwork and learning. At each of the 11 heats the top two teams won a place in the NI Final.
The quiz consisted of seven rounds of eight questions, covering both road safety and general knowledge, with a special round focused on road signs.
Davy Jackson, Chairperson of Road Safe NI, shared his enthusiasm for this year’s event: “We are thrilled with the continued success of the annual Primary School Road Safety Quiz. This year saw the largest entry to date, with 205 schools registered across 11 heats. The final brought together two teams from each heat, all competing to be crowned NI champions at the Glenavon Hotel
Road Safe NI Charity extends its gratitude to all participating schools, teachers, and pupils for their dedication to road safety education. Special thanks also go to CRASH Services Headline Sponsor of the final, all the sponsors of the 11 heats including Police and Community Partnerships (PCPS) Local Councils, Mayors and the Northern Ireland Road Safety Partnership. Thanks also to PSNI Roads Policing, PSNI Neighbourhood Officers and the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, whose support helped make this annual event a resounding success”.
Paula Mahoney, Marketing Director at CRASH Services commented, “At CRASH, we remain dedicated to raising road safety awareness among all road users throughout Northern Ireland. We are proud to sponsor the Primary School Road Safety Quiz final, an initiative that supports early road safety education and will positively impact future generations. Educating children about road safety at a young age is essential in shaping their attitudes and behaviours toward safer practices on our roads. By instilling these values early, we can help to reduce accidents and injuries, ultimately creating safer communities for all.
We are delighted by the impressive participation in this year’s Primary School Road Safety Quiz and inspired by the number of schools involved in this vital initiative. Congratulations to the winners, and heartfelt thanks to all the students and teachers who took part in both the final and the heats of the 2025 Primary School Road Safety Quiz. Their commitment and enthusiasm highlight the critical importance of road safety education.”
DFI Minister Liz Kimmins said: “I am delighted to attend the Northern Ireland Primary School Road Safety Quiz Final that helps to raise awareness among children about road safety, which is an issue for us all.
“Road safety is a priority for me as Minister and last year my predecessor John O’Dowd launched the Road Safety Strategy to 2030 and a supporting 2024/25 Action Plan to help improve road safety for everyone.
“The Department has also recently reinstated funding to support the Motor Vehicle and Road User (MVRUS) GCSE, which is also designed to improve road safety.
“The GCSE targets young people, who are sadly over-represented in road traffic fatalities and serious injuries, and includes a practical element in which pupils learn the safe use of a moped.
“Cycling Proficiency Scheme (CPS) and the Practical Child Pedestrian Safety Training (PCPST) scheme are two of my Department’s long running primary school initiatives and they also make an important contribution to ensuring children understand road safety and active travel issues and also better prepare them as road users as they gain more independence through their childhood.
The results were as follows:
1st Place ………………. Castleroe Primary School, Coleraine
2nd Place ……………… St. Patricks Primary School, Newry
3rd Place ……………… St. Mary’s Altinure Primary School, Derry~Londonderry
Well done to all schools that participated.
