Local runners looking for a reason to get fit in the new year are being urged to sign up for the Lurgan Park 10k Fun Run which is being held on Sunday 23rd February 2014 at 10am in aid of the Southern Area Hospice Services.

The event is being organised by two Lurgan men, David Wilson and Tony McKeown, who are also taking part in this year’s London Marathon to raise funds for the Southern Area Hospice.

David, who teaches in St.Michael’s Grammar School, said “Lurgan Park is a great setting for the run and the distance is ideal for experienced runners preparing for longer distances, runners looking to get fit for the summer or absolute beginners who are just getting into running”.

“We have been working with local Hospice Volunteers to make sure the event is a success and also the council has been great in allowing us to use their facilities. We are expecting a great turnout on the day.

Southern Area Hospice Services was founded in 1989 as a 6-bedded unit and has since expanded to become a 12-bed in-patient unit, which serves the entire Southern Health Board Region. The unit operates 24 hours a day throughout the year and is the heart of the hospice, caring for many people since it’s opening.

Southern Area Hospice provides the service across the Southern Health Board, including Newry & Mourne, Craigavon, Banbridge, Portadown, Armagh and Dungannon. With a fundraising target of £2.2 million for 2012, SAHS need to raise over £250 every single hour to help people affected by terminal illness in Southern Board Area.

The main sponsor of the event is CRASH Services. CRASH specialise in taking the hassle out of a motor accident and have helped over 60,000 local motorists to date. CRASH handle all aspects of an accident including vehicle recovery, replacement vehicles, approved repairs and liaising directly with insurance companies on behalf of motorists.
