What are the rules for driving with your dog?

For many people, their dog is like a family member who they take everywhere with them. With that in mind, are you aware of what the rules are for driving with a dog in your car?

According to the Highway Code, dogs must be suitably restrained so they can not distract you while you are driving, if they are unsuitably restrained, they could distract the driver and / or pose a risk of causing injury to the driver or passengers if the vehicle has to stop suddenly.

A seat belt harness is a cheap and easy way of restraining your pet or alternatively, you can purchase a pet carrier, a dog cage, or a dog guard.

Where can your dog sit in the car?

It is also strongly advised in the Highway Code that dogs are not allowed to travel in the front passenger seat as they can cause distraction. It is advised that dogs sit in the back of a car or the boot (if suitable).

What if your dog isn’t kept suitably restrained?

If you fail to adhere to these guidelines, then you could face penalty points or a £5,000 fine for ‘careless and inconsiderate driving’.

Safety and comfort considerations

It is important to invest in a safety restraint for your dog that is both protective and comfortable for them, when purchasing a pet carrier or a cage, ensure it is big enough and not just something that will fit into your car. If using a seat belt harness, you can purchase a blanket for your dog to sit on, which will also help keep your seats clean!

When travelling with your dog for long journeys, plan in stops to give them some fresh air, stretch their legs and to maybe relieve themselves. Always pack a toy for your dog to keep them entertained for the journey. By keeping your dog happy and content on the journey they could also be less likely to cause distractions.
